RESTORATIVE JUSTICE PROGRAMME LAUNCHED IN BARTICA, REGION 7

the Hon. Mohabir Anil Nandlall SC MP, Attorney General & Minister of Legal Affairs launched Restorative Justice in Region 7 at a meeting held at the Bartica Community Centre. Over 200 community leaders of the Region were in attendance, including, the Regional Chairman, Regional Executive Officer, Mayor and Town Councilors of Bartica, religious leaders, toshaos and other community leaders.
At today’s meeting, Attorney General Nandlall explained to the audience the important ingredients of restorative Justice and how it is to be implemented. He made references to the Restorative Justice Act 2023. The residents were also informed that the Director of Restorative Justice, Mr. William Boston, who was present at the meeting, will return to organize training seminars in the Region, and persons who successfully complete those training programmes will be certified and qualify to work in the Restorative Justice system in the Region.
A Restorative Justice office will be launched at the Probation Department at the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security in Bartica, and the Restorative Justice Officers will work alongside the Probation Officers in the Magistrates’ Court and across the Region.
The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) has recommended that Restorative Justice be implemented as part of the criminal justice system across the Caribbean. Guyana is one of the first jurisdiction to have implemented Restorative Justice in its criminal justice system.
