125 families in Cotton Tree to gain legal land ownership
Attorney General Mohabir Anil Nandlall SC MP
January 2, 2026
One hundred and twenty-five certificates of title will be distributed to residents of Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice, on 9 January 2026.
The titles for the lands they have occupied for generations will be handed over when President Dr Irfaan Ali leads a distribution exercise in the community.
This is according to Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall, who noted that the land regularisation exercise forms part of an ongoing programme aimed at providing legal ownership to families who have long lived on state lands without formal documentation
“Recall we started this process several years ago and we have been doing it in tranches. It’s several villages on the west coast of Berbice that we are regularising. This is where the government is spending millions and millions of dollars at no cost to the residents,” he said.
According to the Attorney General, millions of dollars are being spent by the state to complete surveys, court processes, and documentation, all at no cost to beneficiaries.
The initiative is being led by the Attorney General’s Chambers, working alongside the Land Registry, the Lands and Surveys Commission, and the Commissioner of Titles or Land Court Judge in Berbice.
Nandlall noted that the process previously faced significant delays due to the absence of land court judges, but resumed once judicial appointments were made.
“We suffered a great delay because we didn’t have land court judges at the time. Once we got the judges appointed, the process has resumed and our government is going to aggressively continue the land regularisation programme across this country. President Ali has been authorising the Attorney General to continue this process and in 2026 that process is going to continue with even greater aggression,” he stressed.
Nandlall added that the government intends to aggressively expand the programme, with President Ali authorising continued land regularisation across multiple regions.
A dedicated title regularisation unit is also being established within the Attorney General’s Chambers to focus exclusively on these matters.
Similar exercises are planned for villages along the Essequibo Coast and the Corentyne, with hundreds of families expected to benefit.
The Attorney General emphasised that land ownership is a critical tool for economic empowerment, noting that titled land allows families to access credit, invest, and secure their future
