REGIONAL integration facilitator, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has called on the Hugh Wooding Law School (HWLS) to make provisions to accommodate the top 25 Guyanese law students for 2015. Making the disclosure yesterday was Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge, upon his return to Guyana from the 36th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM in Barbados.

TWENTY-FIVE of the 27 Guyanese students currently attending the Hugh Wooding Law School (HWLS) in Trinidad and Tobago paid a visit last week to Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General, Basil Williams, raising several issues and concerns about their education in relation to tuition, discrimination and disadvantages faced in pursuit of their Legal Education Certificate.Secretary to the group Sherry Hewitt raised the issue with the Attorney General about fee payment, while other students raised concerns of immigration, course content and lateness of the Guyana students list to the Trinidad Immigration. The number one issue is tuition fees which amounts to TT$65,792 (Gy$2.2 million or USD$11,000) per student. The students are now required to pay the full tuition at the beginning of the September semester each year as opposed to 50% in September and 50% in January of the following year.

ATTORNEY-General (AG) and Minister of Legal Affairs, Basil Williams has accused his predecessor, Anil Nandlall, of failing to address the real issue, which is the non-payment of Surinamese company, Rudisa Beverages, and Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL) Nandlall, reacting to AG Williams recent revelations of the former Government’s failure to pay monies owed the two companies, had responded in sections of the media saying that the present Government is to be blamed for that.

A way forward on the automatic entry of Guyana’s top law students into the Hugh Wooding Law School (HWLS) in Trinidad, is apparently being hindered by the University of Guyana (UG).
For years, the top 25 UG law students benefited from automatic entry into the Trinidad law school. However, in more recent times, the automatic entry policy has been fraught with difficulties. In fact, it was unclear most recently what the position on the matter was.
