Walter Rodney CoI nothing but a political witch-hunt – says AG Basil Williams
- Details
MINISTER of Legal Affairs and Attorney General, Mr. Basil Williams, on a programme aired on the National Communications Network, said the Walter Rodney Commission of Inquiry was nothing but “a political witch hunt” of the former Administration, which backfired on them. Minister Williams explained that the Peoples’ Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) had a political gambit which failed. First of all, they lied about Ms. Rodney’s contacting [former President Donald Ramotar], asking for such an inquiry to be held into the death of Walter Rodney…She never requested such an Inquiry…rather we learnt that she received a call purportedly from someone alleging they were from the Office of the President, informing her of the Commission being formed.”
‘Technocrat’ ministers challenge should have been via election petition – AG -Nandlall disagrees
- Details
In response to the opposition PPP/C’s challenge to APNU+AFC technocrat ministers Winston Felix and Keith Scott sitting in the National Assembly, Attorney General (AG) Basil Williams has argued that the High Court has no jurisdiction to hear the matter which was filed by motion and not by an election petition. Williams premised his submissions on the basis that the opposition’s application for redress on the issue by way of a motion before the court, is an affront to strict statutory provisions, which he says clearly provides for such matters to be ventilated via an election petition.
